Feb 2018 Lathe Tool Rack

A couple weeks ago, I went to the St. Louis woodworking show. I ended up buying 4 new lathe tools with replaceable carbide inserts on the ends.

Of course, the next step was to build a new lathe tool rack to hold them!

I had built 2 wood racks before, one in the early 80's and one in 1993.  I designed this new one using Sketchup, based upon the old designs.  It is kind of a unique design, in that a sloped board at the bottom forces the tool to lay vertical in the correct position.

Closing Thoughts on this Project

This was a fun and quick project to build. I just rubbed on boiled linseed oil for the finish................which will turn a darker brown over time, like the older lathe tool racks shown in the photo above.

It is probably best to adjust the position and angle of the bottom tilted piece using your actual lathe tools, until you are happy with the gravity action forcing the tool into its proper position.
